Doing work in your back and front yard can be a real burden. From the scorching hot summers to the chilly winters, it's easy to procrastinate going outside and getting those jobs done another day. However, there are certain jobs that need to be done all year around, and forgetting to do them or leaving them for too long can have dire consequences. From simple maintenance to big cleaning operations, here are some jobs that you need to stay on top of around your yard.

Cleaning gutters

Making sure your gutters are clean is a year-round must-do. The obvious consequences of clogged gutters are that they will hinder the flow of water when it rains, potentially flooding and damaging your roof, walls or anything on the outside of your home. Blocked gutters can also lead to blocked drains, which can not only cause havoc on your internal and external plumbing, but could even flood your property. However, these consequences are pretty well-known. Many people also forget to worry about their gutters when the weather is dry, even though this can pose a whole new danger. Dried out leaves and debris piling up in your gutters can create an extremely dangerous fire hazard. The smallest ember, a reflection from a window, or even just a particularly hot day can set this tinder alight and cause a house fire. For these reasons, it's important to ensure that your guttering is regularly cleaned and always in good condition.

Fence maintenance

Fences, shared or otherwise, can often be neglected as they're at the back of the home and the mind. As an important part of our home security and safety, it's crucial to make sure that they are still standing strong. Since most of us are out and about during the day, it can be difficult to notice when things are starting to break. Check for weaknesses in your fence that could be used to break into your backyard while you're away. If your fence is low, starting to deteriorate or has weak points that could easily be removed by a home invader, get it replaced or repaired as soon as possible. Fences are also a large part of the first impression of the home, as it's the first thing people see from the outside of your home. Give your home an instant facelift with a new fence, or just by painting or pressure cleaning an existing one.

Trimming and mowing

Finally, everyone knows that mowing the lawn and maintaining trees and hedges in the yard can be a burden. Usually, people tend to think that if the lawn gets a little long, so what? However, long grass isn't just an eyesore. Even slightly overgrown lawns are the perfect hiding place for snakes, spiders and other dangerous critters, and makes it difficult to see anything on the lawn that could cause serious damage if stood on. Trimming trees back is also crucial, as stray tree branches can become dangerous debris that can damage your home during a storm. Dying leave and branches also create tinder for house fires, which can become extremely dangerous when they grow too close to your home. While all this maintenance can feel like a burden, you don't have to do it alone.
