Get your IT into gear before returning to the new normal

Tue 16th Jun 2020

It's worth spending that extra time to take care of your technology before you head back to work.
It's worth spending that extra time to take care of your technology before you head back to work.

From the office, to the lounge and back again, our technology has been on quite the adventure over the last few months. When was the last time you cleared your desktop, or checked on your computer storage? As many of us begin a transition back to the office, now is a great time to ensure your tech is in top condition so you can focus on the real work.

Laptops

While laptops are designed for on the go performance, even they need some tender loving care once in a while to ensure things run smoothly.

Check your cords - Is there fraying on the ends of your charging cords, or are they yellowing from constant overheating? It might be time to replace them, or at least have an IT professional take a look at them.

Check your storage - Your internal storage levels can affect the speed of your computer, which is never great when you are in a hurry. Keeping your file storage in check with cloud storage or an external hard drive can curb many issues before they arise.

Check your battery - If you notice your battery is not charging, is bulging or exceedingly hot, it is important to get it checked immediately by an IT professional, as faulty batteries can be a safety hazard.

Make sure you have plenty of storage on your laptop by backing your data up.

PCs

Just because it sits on a desktop, doesn't mean your PC doesn't also need some attention.  Regardless of whether it's been sitting unused in the office or getting a workout at home, it's important to make sure the dust filters are clean. If you aren't sure what is safe, or you are worried about damaging wires, your IT department, or a computer technician should be able to give you some guidance, and remember to never use a vacuum on your PC!

Software and Storage

Backup, backup, backup - You never know what is going to happen to your computer, so it is important to keep those important files backed up on cloud or external storage. Set a date once a week or month to ensure your most important files are backed up.

We also need to protect our important information by ensuring we have up to date virus software. If you do work in an office, make sure to scan for viruses before reconnecting to office servers, to ensure that your company's data is protected from outside intruders. If you notice any nasties, an IT professional can help to remove the virus and protect your files.
