Volkswagen reveals its new monster ute

Volkswagen has revealed details of its limited-edition, range-topping monster ute.

The new Amarok V6 580S will be limited to just 200 examples with prices starting at $70,990 (before on-road costs).

Based on the range-topping Amarok V6 Ultimate, the 580S bumps up the Amarok's tough-guy appeal.

Exterior touches include a roof-mounted light bar with two 86-watt LED lamps, 20-inch gloss alloy wheels, moulded sports bar, LED daytime running lights and a premium black roll cover.

Inside, the 580S scores faux suede trimmed seats and a heating function for the front passengers. There is also black headliner and pillar trim,

Power comes from VW's mighty 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine that makes 190kW - with 200kW for short periods of overboost - and a hefty 580Nm. This is paired to an eight-speed auto that delivers power to all four wheels.

The Amarok V6 580S is the latest in a long line of top-shelf tough utes as the market for expensive utes continues to grow.

Volkswagen's contender will compete with the likes of the new Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior, Toyota HiLux Rogue and Ford Ranger Wildtrak.

Nick Reid, Head of VW Commercial Vehicles Australia, believes the 580S will be a big hit.

"The Amarok V6 580S raises the bar yet again with a host of high-value special features that are not only practical, but lift the on-road presence of the most powerful ute in its class," he said.

However, the Amarok's achilles heel still remains, as rear seats passengers are exposed with no rear seat airbags.

The Amarok is covered by a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

The vehicle is ready to order now from Volkswagen dealerships with the car due to arrive in June.
