Mataranka Water Allocation Plan

The draft Mataranka Water Allocation Plan is now open for the community to provide their feedback. The plan applies to the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, an area of approximately 9,282 km² that includes Mataranka township, Elsey National Park, and the iconic Bitter and Rainbow springs.

The plan’s focus is on maintaining spring flows and ecological conditions during dry years while providing long-term water security for drinking water, agriculture, horticulture and mining enterprises in the region.

The plan protects the groundwater resource and flows in the Roper River by managing water extraction in line with climatic variability.

A protected environmental area may also be declared by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water to further protect this important water resource.

Feedback closes on Monday 3 June 2024.
