ABORIGINAL CULTURAL HERITAGE ASSESSMENT: INVITATION TO REGISTER

On behalf of City West Housing (the proponent), Curio Projects (heritage consultants) are commencing Aboriginal community consultation for the for the ‘Bangalay’ Redevelopment Project (the study area, see map above), located at 216-220 Wyndham Street, Alexandria, bordered by Wyndham Street to the west, Botany Road to the east, McEvoy Street to the south and Lot 1 DP585736 (former electrical substation no.89, LEP #12240) to the north. ‘Bangalay’ sits within the City of Sydney Council LGA.

The proposed development will involve construction of an approximately 10-storey affordable housing block, comprising of residential units and commercial/retail spaces.


The proposal includes the following scope of physical works:

- Demolition of existing warehouses

- Removal of some existing vegetation and trees

- Excavation and filling (no basement level)

- Construction of approximately a 10-storey block with residential units and commercial/retail spaces.


The purpose of this community consultation with Aboriginal people is to aid in the preparation of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Report (ACHAR) in accordance with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.


Community consultation is being undertaken to assist the assessment of cultural significance of the study area. This notification is being undertaken in accordance with Section 4.1.2 of the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and the Aboriginal cultural heritage requirements for proponents 2010.


Curio Projects invite Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to determining the significance of Aboriginal objects(s) and/or places in the area to register an interest in a process of community consultation.


Please note that when you register an interest in this project your details will be forwarded to Heritage NSW and Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, unless you specify that you would not like your details released.
